Trump renews Modi assurance claim on Russian oil curbs
Amid trade frictions, Trump says Modi vowed to end imports; MEA dismisses it as national security call.
Newsroom, October 20, 2025:
U.S. President Donald Trump doubled down on his assertion that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi committed to phasing out Russian oil purchases, marking the third such reference in a week during an Air Force One discussion.
Trump noted the decision would require time to implement, tying it to broader efforts to isolate Russia's energy revenue post-Ukraine invasion.
The remarks come as India, a major buyer of discounted Russian crude, faces U.S. pressure to align with Western sanctions.
India's External Affairs Ministry rejected the claim, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stating no recent leader talks occurred and that energy choices prioritise affordability and security for citizens.
Trump also cautioned of steep tariffs on Indian goods if the imports persist, building on the 50% duties already in place. The exchange underscores strains in bilateral ties, where strategic partnerships clash with economic divergences.
