Endowments minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy blames overcrowding for stampede tragedy
Anam Ramanarayana Reddy says private temple lacked permits for 30,000 crowd; government aids victims.
Amaravati, November 01, 2025: Andhra Pradesh Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy attributed the deadly stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district, to severe overcrowding at the private site, which was designed for just 2,000 to 3,000 people but saw 30,000 arrive for Ekadashi celebrations.
The tragedy, which claimed 10 lives and injured over 30, stemmed from inadequate planning and no prior approval from authorities, leading to chaos on a temporary staircase with limited access.
Reddy conveyed deep sorrow for the loss, especially among women and children, and affirmed the government's full commitment to medical care for the wounded and support for bereaved families.
The minister clarified that the temple operates outside government oversight, underscoring the need for better coordination for large events at non-endowment sites. A magisterial inquiry is underway to pinpoint lapses and recommend safeguards.
