Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has issued a stark warning about rising global instability, urging citizens to brace for a turbulent future. Speaking in a video address on April 4, Wong highlighted the erosion of international norms and the seismic shift triggered by new US tariffs, which he said mark the end of rules-based globalization. “The global calm and stability we once knew will not return anytime soon,” he stated, emphasizing the need for resilience in an increasingly protectionist world.

Wong pointed to the US imposing sweeping tariffs on nearly all trading partners as a pivotal moment, placing Singapore in the lowest tier with a 10 percent rate. Despite this, he cautioned that the broader economic fallout could squeeze small, open economies like Singapore, risking marginalization. “We cannot expect the rules which protected small states will still hold,” he said, calling for vigilance and stronger alliances with like-minded nations.

The prime minister stressed Singapore’s readiness, citing its reserves and national cohesion as strengths. However, he warned of tougher times ahead as global institutions weaken and major powers prioritize self-interest, echoing concerns raised at the recent PAP Conference 2024. With elections looming in 2025, Wong’s message blends caution with optimism, rallying citizens to adapt to a “more arbitrary and dangerous” global order.
