Andhra Pradesh plans two Greenfield international airports

The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated preparations for the construction of two Greenfield International Airports—one in Amaravati, the state’s new capital, and another in the Srikakulam district. Tenders have been invited for consultancy firms to prepare a Technical and Economic Feasibility Report (TEFR), a critical step in advancing this ambitious infrastructure project. The Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation (APADC) has set March 21 as the deadline for online submissions, with technical bids to be opened on March 24 and financial bids on March 27. The selected firms will assess location suitability, financial models, environmental impact, and prepare a 35-year concept master plan for the airports.

The proposed airport in Amaravati is expected to alleviate congestion at Vijayawada’s Gannavaram Airport, which has seen rising passenger traffic in recent years. Dr. Jasti Veeranjaneyulu, chairman of the Amaravati Development Committee, emphasized the project’s potential, stating, “An international airport in Amaravati will not only improve connectivity but also attract investments and accelerate the growth of IT and industrial sectors.” Meanwhile, the Srikakulam airport aims to boost economic development in the northern region, which has long been underserved by transportation infrastructure. The project is expected to enhance tourism, create jobs, and provide better access to domestic and international markets.

While the initiative has been widely welcomed, challenges such as land acquisition, environmental clearances, and funding remain. The state government has assured that the feasibility studies will address these issues comprehensively, ensuring the projects are economically viable and environmentally sustainable. With these airports, Andhra Pradesh aims to strengthen its position as a logistics and manufacturing hub, leveraging its strategic location on India’s eastern coast and paving the way for long-term economic growth.
