Australia approves unpeeled prawn imports from Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati, October 22, 2025:

Australia has issued its initial approval for importing unpeeled Indian prawns, ending an eight-year restriction and providing a vital lifeline to Andhra Pradesh's aquaculture sector, which contributes significantly to the nation's seafood exports.

The decision, announced Tuesday, comes amid ongoing U.S. tariff pressures and is expected to unlock new markets for the state's coastal producers, potentially adding millions in revenue and supporting thousands of jobs in processing hubs.

IT and Industries Minister Nara Lokesh celebrated the development on X, calling it a "major step forward" and expressing gratitude to both Indian and Australian authorities for facilitating the breakthrough.

This move aligns with Andhra's push to diversify trade partners, strengthening the $2 billion industry reliant on tiger shrimp and other varieties.
