Amaravati, March 26, 2026: Vizianagaram Deputy Transport Commissioner D. Mani Kumar has directed all private bus operators to strictly follow safety norms.

He pointed out that many long-distance sleeper buses modify vehicles by blocking exit doors with extra berths and leaving very narrow aisles. This leaves little room for passengers to escape quickly during accidents or fires.

The department has inspected nearly 50 private buses operating routes to cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar.

Officials found that most space is used for seats or berths, with no proper alarm systems or clear emergency paths.

Passengers sleeping in upper berths often struggle to get out in time. Drivers and attendants must stay alert to guide evacuations in an orderly way.
