Amaravati, March 24, 2026: Guntur Municipal Corporation has begun a detailed enumeration drive under the Union government’s SMILE programme to identify and rehabilitate individuals who beg.

The survey, carried out by Tirupati-based Rojavanam Trust, started on March 18 and has already covered busy spots like the bus stand, railway station, hospital, stadium and several residential areas.

Officials say the focus is not punishment but dignity offering shelter, food, healthcare, counselling, skill training and help to find steady work. The Centre has released the first instalment of ₹9 lakh for the three-year project.

Commissioner K. Mayur Ashok stressed that every person will receive tailored support based on their background.
