Newsroom, March 12, 2026: G7 leaders from the United States, Canada, Japan, Italy, Britain, Germany, and France met virtually on March 11, chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron.

They focused on the economic fallout of the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, including sharp rises in global energy costs and threats to key shipping routes.

The group committed to examine providing naval escorts for commercial vessels in the Gulf, particularly through the vital Strait of Hormuz, which handles a major share of world oil flows.

A dedicated working group will evaluate this under suitable security conditions. Leaders also plan outreach to shipping firms, transporters, and insurers to support safer navigation.
