Amaravati, March 05, 2026: The Eluru canal in Vijayawada has become choked with plastic waste and other garbage, especially near the railway station and commercial areas in One Town.

Authorities link much of the buildup to ongoing pump house desilting work, which has released more debris into the water. Workers from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation perform daily removals, but piles return quickly.

A filtering system now traps floating trash at key points, and fencing on bridges aims to curb dumping.

Civic groups push for stricter penalties on polluters, noting the canal and nearby Budameru rivulet supply irrigation and drinking water to villages in Krishna and Eluru districts.
