Amaravati, February 27, 2026: A trusted morning staple warm milk turned fatal for families in Rajamahendravaram, East Godavari district.
Between February 16 and 18, one unauthorised vendor supplied milk to over 100 households across neighbourhoods like Swaroopa Nagar, Gandhipuram, and Chowdeswari Nagar.
Victims soon suffered vomiting, fatigue, and anuria, leading to acute kidney failure. Five died, including three seniors and a six-year-old boy; fifteen more, among them infants as young as five months, required ventilators and dialysis.
The vendor was arrested February 23 under strict penal provisions. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced ₹10 lakh ex gratia for deceased families, while the state committed free treatment.
Health teams launched door-to-door checks and medical camps. Toxicology tests continue at labs in Tirupati, Kakinada, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada to identify the adulterant echoing broader concerns over food safety and kidney issues in parts of Andhra Pradesh.
