Tirumala ghee scam called gravest in temple's history

Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu labeled the adulteration of ghee used in Tirumala laddus the "gravest scam" in TTD history. Nearly 20 crore laddus were made with spurious ghee worth over ₹234 crore between 2019 and 2024.

Amaravati, February 25, 2026: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu told the Andhra Pradesh Assembly that organized syndicates supplied 59.71 lakh kg of adulterated ghee to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) from 2019 to 2024.

This ghee, mixed with chemicals and not derived from milk, was used to prepare about 20 crore sacred laddus offered as prasadam to millions of devotees worldwide.

Naidu described the act as a serious betrayal of faith, calling it a "great sin" against Lord Venkateswara.

Investigations, including a CBI-supervised SIT probe, uncovered manipulated tenders, diluted quality norms starting around 2020, fake certificates, and seized materials like monoglycerides and acetic acid used in the fraud.
