Newsroom, February 23, 2026: Mukul Roy, a key figure in West Bengal politics, died at a private hospital in Kolkata following cardiac arrest.
He was 71. Roy had been in poor health for years, including neurological issues, and spent his final days in a coma.
A founding member of the All India Trinamool Congress in 1998, Roy served as Railway Minister in 2011 during the UPA government after Mamata Banerjee stepped down.
He held two Rajya Sabha terms from West Bengal and won as MLA from Krishnanagar Uttar in 2021 on a BJP ticket before rejoining TMC later that year. His career featured strategic shifts between TMC and BJP, earning him a reputation as a sharp political operator.
