Newsroom, February 21, 2026: The US Supreme Court delivered a landmark 6-3 decision on February 20, striking down President Donald Trump's broad tariffs imposed under emergency powers.

The ruling in cases including Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump and Trump v. V.O.S. Selections held that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not allow the president to levy such duties, as only Congress holds the authority to impose taxes.

Indian-origin lawyer Neal Katyal, a former Acting Solicitor General and veteran Supreme Court advocate, argued successfully for small businesses affected by the tariffs.

He hailed the verdict as a win for the Constitution, stating that presidents are powerful but the document is more so, and the system self-corrects to protect separation of powers. The decision limits unilateral trade actions and may force future policies through legislative channels.
