Amaravati, February 19, 2026: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has ruled that electricity authorities cannot disconnect power supply without prior notice and valid reasons, calling such actions illegal and against natural justice principles.

Justice Ninala Jayasurya held that electricity qualifies as a basic necessity tied to fundamental rights under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution.

In a case involving Kakatiya Seva Trust, whose connection was abruptly cut and meter removed over suspected irregularities and a third-party complaint without any show-cause notice the court ordered immediate restoration of supply and a new meter within seven days.

Authorities retain the right to act lawfully after due process, including issuing notice and allowing explanation, even in cases of alleged misuse or absent construction at the site.
