Amaravati, February 18, 2026: Andhra Pradesh's HRD and IT Minister Nara Lokesh announced a major push to upgrade government schools, targeting 3- to 4-star quality standards across the state.

The plan expands the 'One Class - One Teacher' model from 3% to nearly 33% of schools to boost learning outcomes and exam performance. Infrastructure fixes take priority: leak-proof buildings, fresh painting, play areas, benches, modern toilets, and safe drinking water. No school currently holds 5-star status, and nearly 40% lag at 1- or 2-star levels.

Lokesh highlighted revocation of the previous GO 117, which he said distanced poor students from public schools and contributed to closures despite earlier programs.

Funding includes Rs 200 crore in School Management Committee accounts plus Rs 800 crore newly allocated, totaling around Rs 1,000 crore next year to finish pending works and add classrooms.
