Amaravati, February 16, 2026: Handloom weavers in Patur village, Nellore district, stand to gain stronger market recognition and better earnings as the Handlooms and Textiles Department advances plans for a Geographical Indication (GI) tag on Patur sarees.
Field visits on February 12 documented age-old weaving methods, socio-economic impact, and the craft's distinct features in villages like Patur, Gummaladibba, and Narayanareddypeta.
These sarees, often silk in warp with cotton in weft for a striking look, once rivaled famous centres like Venkatagiri and Gadwal. Nearly every household in Patur relies on this craft.
A local weaver stressed the need for protection: the tag would guard against copies, boost value, and preserve the tradition for coming generations.
