Vizianagaram, January 31: The district administration has submitted proposals worth Rs 3,900 crore to the Union government under the Purvodaya scheme, targeting a major upgrade of irrigation infrastructure in this agriculture-dependent region.

Key focus areas include completing the Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanthi project to irrigate nearly 3.94 lakh acres across Vizianagaram and nearby districts, stabilising 1.24 lakh acres via the Thotapalli right canal, finishing pending works at Tarakarama Teertha Sagar for 24,710 acres plus drinking water supply, and developing the Gajapathinagaram Branch Canal to cover 15,000 acres.

Additional efforts involve the Gadigedda-Champavathi Link and revival of around 8,000 tanks under related programmes. These steps address years of delays and maintenance issues that have left farmers reliant on erratic monsoons, despite agriculture sustaining over 90% of the local population.
