Amaravati, January 31, 2026: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has clarified that setting or changing the retirement age for employees in government undertakings, societies, and corporations remains a matter of state policy.

A division bench comprising Justice Battu Devanand and Justice Avadhanam Hariharanath Sharma dismissed appeals by employees from entities like the AP Cooperative Oil Growers Federation and State Warehousing Corporation. They had sought directions to increase the superannuation age from 60 to 62 years.

The petitioners argued that governing boards had passed resolutions favouring the hike, and a ministerial committee was examining the issue following a government order from August last year.

The court upheld a prior single-judge ruling, stressing that such resolutions need explicit government approval and amendments to service rules to take effect. Without these steps, existing rules prevail, and courts cannot intervene or issue directives.
