Amaravati, January 28, 2026: Visakhapatnam's Swarna Bharathi Indoor Stadium reopened Tuesday following a Rs 16.9 crore modernisation under the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City project.

The upgrade adds six badminton courts, advanced flooring, air-conditioning, enhanced seating for 1,750 spectators, fire safety, CCTV, and better surrounding infrastructure.

Visakhapatnam MP Mathukumilli Sribharat, who inaugurated the facility alongside GVMC Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao, dismissed any privatisation plans.

He stressed the coalition government's focus on sports infrastructure and public access through annual memberships, tournament rentals for maintenance, and structured time slots at fair fees.

Officials including the District Collector and GVMC Commissioner highlighted inclusivity for underprivileged players and potential to host national and international events in badminton, volleyball, basketball, and more.
