Amaravati, January 28, 2026: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has established four temporary shelter homes to provide immediate refuge for destitute and homeless people in the city.
This step comes after the Andhra Pradesh High Court directed action in late December 2025, following a Public Interest Litigation highlighting the lack of adequate facilities. A special drive identified around 395 individuals sleeping on pavements, many reluctant to shift due to habits, addictions, or reliance on street support.
The new shelters, located near community halls in Ayodhya Nagar, Jakkampudi, Seethannapeta, and the V.M. Ranga Mango market area, can hold up to 450 people combined. They serve as a bridge while permanent options await approval.
