Vijayawada, January 25, 2026: Retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy warned that India's Constitution faces serious challenges from autonomous institutions, including the judiciary itself.
Speaking at a seminar titled "Challenges in implementing the Constitution" organized by the All India Lawyers’ Union and Jana Vignana Vedika, he stressed that courts must strictly follow constitutional norms while upholding the document.
He pointed to issues like doubts over judicial appointments and transfers, the lack of impeachment powers for Governors who defy elected governments, and controversial court rulings that appear to stray from core principles.
Reddy also criticized practices such as Governors refusing to read state-prepared speeches in assemblies and the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which he called objectionable. These trends, he argued, weaken federal balance and democratic safeguards.
