Amaravati, January 22, 2026: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has raised serious concerns over the limited availability of organ transplant centres in government hospitals.
A division bench observed that only nine such centres operate statewide, confined to select regions despite specialist doctors and infrastructure in other facilities.
Hearing a long-pending Public Interest Litigation from 2016, the court questioned why more government hospitals have not sought recognition. It suggested expanding to district headquarters for better patient access and convenience.
The bench directed the state government to file a comprehensive affidavit explaining the restrictions and provide full details on potential expansions. The matter is listed for further hearing on April 1.
