Amaravati, January 22, 2026: The Central government will table a bill in Parliament to legally designate Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh's capital. This follows requests from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and state submissions to Union ministries.

The move amends the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, which named Hyderabad joint capital until June 2024.

Farmers who pooled land for Amaravati's development have long sought this clarity. The bill aims to provide statutory protection, boost investor confidence, and accelerate infrastructure in the region.

Preparations include Cabinet review before introduction in the session beginning January 28.
