Vizag faces up to 98 cm sea level rise by 2100

Visakhapatnam could see sea levels climb as high as 98 cm by 2100 under high-emissions paths, warns a new study. This threatens the port city’s low-lying zones, infrastructure, and residents.

Amaravati, January 14, 2026: A recent study on sea level trends along India’s east coast projects significant rises for Visakhapatnam by the end of the century.

Under low-emissions scenarios, the increase stands at around 41 cm; middle scenarios point to 70 cm; and high-emissions cases reach up to 98 cm between 2091 and 2100.

Researchers drew on satellite data, tide-gauge records, and advanced climate models to track changes.

From 1995 to 2020, Visakhapatnam saw an average rise of nearly 5 mm per year, accelerating after 2010. Factors include global ocean warming, ice melt, shifting currents, and local issues like land subsidence from groundwater use and development.
