Amaravati, January 14, 2026: Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary in Eluru district bursts with life as migratory birds arrive for winter. Forest officials counted 96,195 birds from 116 species in the first week of January.

Species include Asian Openbill, Northern Pintail, Gadwall, Spot-billed Duck, and rare sightings like Baillon’s Crake. Ducks appear in thousands, joining resident birds on the vast wetland’s reed beds and mudflats.

The sanctuary, a key stop on the Central Asian Flyway, offers refuge for birds traveling from northern Asia and beyond. Officials note arrivals will continue until Maha Sivaratri, after which warmer weather prompts their return north.
