Amaravati, January 14, 2026: Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (AP-GENCO) aims to diversify its energy sources by adding a nuclear component through a Small Modular Reactor (SMR).

Managing Director S. Nagalakshmi stated that the step would help meet the state's power needs with a significantly smaller carbon footprint. The current mix relies heavily on thermal plants and hydro resources, with AP-GENCO supplying 45-55% of the grid.

The SMR plan has in-principle approval but remains early-stage. No working SMR exists in India yet, so experts must study costs, regulations, and other details carefully before moving forward.

AP-GENCO also focuses on finishing Pumped Storage Hydropower Plants for reliable, long-lasting storage often 50 years or more and keeping thermal plants efficient.

It addresses coal quality issues by blending fuels and explores limited Battery Energy Storage Systems while watching costs and private competition.
