Amaravati, December 31, 2025: A division bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court has instructed the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to launch an urgent drive to relocate homeless individuals sleeping on footpaths at night to existing shelter homes.

The court also ordered the setup of dedicated shelters for women, noting with concern that none currently exist in Vijayawada despite proposals for expansion.

The directive came during a Public Interest Litigation hearing, highlighting risks like accidents and pollution faced by those on pavements. The bench directed VMC to submit a compliance report soon and involved the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department to file an affidavit within two weeks on statewide measures for district headquarters.
