Amaravati, December 31, 2025: Andhra Pradesh's aquaculture industry, a backbone of the state's coastal economy, suffered major setbacks in 2025 from US tariffs on Indian shrimp imports.
The measures led to a near-complete stop in shipments to the US, which once took 70-80% of the state's aqua exports. Disease outbreaks in shrimp crops worsened the pain, causing up to 80% losses in key belts like Krishna, Godavari districts, and others.
Farmers and processors shifted stocks to Japan, China, Europe, and Hong Kong, but smaller volumes and strict rules there triggered price drops and idle plants. Andhra Pradesh, producing most of India's shrimp, saw export realisations fall sharply despite modest late-year price recovery.
