Amaravati, December 29, 2025: Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta addressed a press conference at the AP Police Headquarters in Mangalagiri today, highlighting the persistent threat of cybercrimes.

He revealed that police handled over 62,000 cybercrime complaints and registered 2,332 cases in 2025, with public losses reaching ₹815 crore. Authorities managed to freeze ₹98 crore and refund ₹3 crore to victims. Gupta specifically pointed to "digital arrest" frauds, where perpetrators often operate from abroad, including China, and convert stolen funds into cryptocurrency, complicating recovery efforts.

The DGP stressed that no legitimate government agency conducts arrests via phone or video calls, urging residents to verify suspicious contacts and avoid sharing personal or financial details.

While overall crime in the state dropped by 6.17% this year, cyber threats remain a top challenge alongside issues like ganja trafficking and crimes against women. He emphasised education as key to prevention, encouraging immediate reporting via helplines like 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
