Amaravati, December 25, 2025: India's metro rail network has expanded rapidly to 1,090 km across 26 cities, up from 248 km in just five cities a decade ago. Recent commissions, including Bhopal's new Orange Line corridor, mark this growth under accelerated urban mobility efforts.
Daily ridership now averages 1.15 crore, four times higher than in 2014, making metro travel 50-60% cheaper per passenger-km than private vehicles.
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar highlighted that India ranks third globally behind China and the US, and with 900 km of projects in the pipeline, the country aims to overtake the US soon by closing a roughly 300-310 km gap.
This positions India as a leader in sustainable urban transport amid rising city populations.
