Amaravati, November 29, 2025: The Andhra Pradesh government has taken its first step toward administrative reorganisation by issuing a preliminary notification to create Markapur as the state's 29th district, carving it out of the existing Prakasam district while realigning boundaries to reunite the Addanki and Kandukur assembly segments.
The move, approved by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, addresses long-standing demands from western Prakasam's residents who struggled with distance from Ongole headquarters, promising closer governance and better service delivery for over 3 lakh people across four assembly constituencies: Markapur, Giddaluru, Kanigiri, and Yerragondapalem.
The notification, GO Rt No. 1497 from the Revenue (Lands-IV) Department under Section 3(5) of the AP Districts Formation Act, 1974, was published in Gazette Nos. 187 and 188 on November 27.
Prakasam District Collector A Syamala has invited objections and suggestions in English or Telugu within 30 days, with submissions accepted at the Collectorate office and an objections box on the first floor. Post-review, Prakasam will encompass six assembly segments: Ongole, SN Padu, Darsi, Kandukur, Kondapi, and Addanki under three revenue divisions: Ongole, Kandukur, and Addanki.
The creation of Markapur, with its headquarters there and revenue divisions of Markapur and Kanigiri, aims to streamline administration in the arid region known for cotton and oilseeds.
Addanki will emerge as a new revenue divisional headquarters covering 10 mandals from Addanki and Darsi segments, while Kandukur's division will include five mandals plus Ponnaluru and Marripudi from Kondapi.
The realignment, including Pedda Harivanam mandal from Adoni in Kurnool, reflects a broader push for equitable growth.
