Amaravati, November 19, 2025: YSR Congress Party leaders have pressed the ruling Telugu Desam Party to spell out its position on the proposed 100% privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, accusing the NDA government at the Centre of pushing ahead despite earlier promises to safeguard the iconic facility.
The demand comes as the Union Cabinet considers full disinvestment, potentially ending the plant's public sector status and threatening thousands of livelihoods in north coastal Andhra.
YSRCP's Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy highlighted past TDP assurances against privatisation, questioning if the party now backs the move under pressure from alliance dynamics.
He warned that silence could erode trust among workers and locals who view the plant as a symbol of regional pride since its 1992 commissioning. The issue, tied to Rs 35,000 crore in losses and strategic steel needs, has reignited debates on industrial policy.
