Newsroom, November 18, 2025: India has quietly increased liquefied petroleum gas purchases from the United States in recent months, citing surging needs under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana that provides subsidised cylinders to low-income households.
The move, which scales back reliance on discounted Russian supplies, follows repeated public statements from President Donald Trump urging New Delhi to curb Moscow's energy revenue amid the Ukraine war, with veiled tariff threats on Indian exports if compliance lags.
Officials insist the shift is driven by domestic consumption, Ujjwala connections crossed 100 million, and better price stability from US suppliers, but opposition figures like Congress MP Jairam Ramesh called it "succumbing to American bullying." The change could add $2-3 billion annually to import bills, straining subsidies.
